Transgender Youth and Online vs. Offline Social Support

Recent research has demonstrated that trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) youth are at risk for a host of negative outcomes including higher rates of depression, suicidality, and substance use. As COVID-19 has re-shaped the landscape, TGNC youths’ support systems may have changed dramatically. Little is known about TGNC youths’ access to support systems, both online and offline. This study seeks to explore the ways in which TGNC youth receive support and connect with their support systems online and in-person before, in the early and middle part, and over one year into the COVID-19 Shelter in Place conditions.
